One of the smallest of the North American
Elk, this species once thrived in the
grasslands and marshes of the vast
California central valley. Tule Elk are now
protected in reserves around the state and
free-roaming herds have been established
in areas of California from transplanting
reserve animals. I'm able to visit the Tule Elk
State Natural Reserve often and the fall
presents a beautiful stage for these animals
when the clouds pile high in the sky. I can
easily imagine the grasslands of the Central
Valley with vast roaming herds of Tule Elk.
